Effort on student bus use

Another effort may be made to get students on Dunedin buses, perhaps with a tertiary discount.

The Otago Regional Council has previously tried to get more students to use buses, without success.

Appeals from the Otago University Students' Association and Otago Polytechnic Students' Association for significant discounts on bus fares were made during this year's council annual plan process.

As a result, council chairman Stephen Woodhead, deputy chairman David Shepherd and Cr Michael Deaker met representatives of the students' associations.

OUSA president Francisco Hernandez said the association hoped to work with the regional council to trial a tertiary student concession fare.

Surveys had shown students' bus use came down to economics.

They had indicated use would improve if services were improved and price was addressed, he said.
