Green-fingered Dunedin residents have enjoyed shopping for gardening supplies over Easter.

While many stores are required to close on Easter Sunday, garden centres are among those allowed to trade.

Blueskin Nurseries & Cafe co-owner Sally Brown said the weekend’s Easter trading had been good until the weather turned bad about noon on Sunday.

Garden centres were a very weather dependent industry, Ms Brown said.

"If it’s nice, sunny weather then people come out and about," she said.

They had been closed on Friday, as they were obliged to do so under the law.

Easter could traditionally be a very busy weekend for garden centres.

"It’s the last long weekend that generally has nice weather to be able to do an autumn clean-up and prepare for the winter," Ms Brown said.

Customers had been buying a bit of everything, including lots of vegetables and fruit trees, she said.

Autumn was a great time for planting.

It had been a dry summer but people were confident about getting new plants into the ground given the recent rain.

There had also been lots of families with visitors at the garden centre over the Easter weekend, including people who were spending it together for the first time in a couple of years due to Covid-19 related disruptions.

The cafe had been steady, which was nice, Ms Brown said.

Ultimately, it had been a good Easter but it was important for people to know there was still time to get into their gardens.
