Preferential tickets to the Paul Simon concert are available to Otago residents from today. Prices for tickets to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and 12-time Grammy Award winner's concert are $99 for silver reserve seating and $149 for gold reserve seating.

''The region has made a huge contribution to the stadium, so it's fitting that they get an early opportunity to secure tickets to this exciting event,'' Dunedin Venues chief executive Darren Burden said yesterday.

''With the extremely competitive prices, we are expecting tickets to sell quickly, so I'd like to encourage as many locals as possible to get in early.''

Simon will perform at Forsyth Barr Stadium, supported by Rufus Wainwright, on Saturday, April 6. From 9am today, Otago residents can buy preferential tickets by using the password ''Otago'' and providing proof of address, such as an electricity bill.

The preferential ticket offer is available through TicketDirect online and outlets and ends at 5pm on Thursday, or when the allocation is exhausted.

Forsyth Barr Stadium members can purchase a maximum of six preferential tickets from today. Tickets go on sale to the general public at 9am on Friday.

Otago residents were offered preferential tickets for the Sir Elton John concert at the stadium in 2011.

The move attracted controversy after it was discovered the preferential tickets were also offered to MasterCard and TicketDirect members.
