They have seen the billboards, heard the advertising campaigns and, this week, a Shanghai-based couple had the opportunity to experience New Zealand first hand.

Town planner Zhang Min (28) and his medical publisher wife, Li Jing (27), were chosen to visit New Zealand as part of a newspaper campaign to promote the country before the Shanghai World Expo, which opens next month.

The couple, who were accompanied by a reporter and photographer from the Shanghai Morning Post, visited Rotorua, Queenstown and Dunedin during the trip, their first to New Zealand.

Their experiences, which included holding hands while bungy-jumping and visiting the Dunedin Chinese Garden, will be published in a special Shanghai expo supplement.

The couple said New Zealand had lived up to its marketing, which portrayed it as a beautiful country with a diverse range of adventure activities.

They knew little about Dunedin, but were impressed by its sister city status with Shanghai, saying Dunedin was a gateway from China to New Zealand.
