A high-flying Dunedin schoolgirl is a step closer to realising her dream of being a professional dancer.

Queens High School year 11 pupil Lisa Craig has been selected for the Australian Ballet School in Melbourne.

The 15-year-old will spend the next four years at the prestigious international school, graduating as a professional ballet dancer when she is 19.

Lisa sent the school a DVD of her dancing in June and was invited to audition last month.

"After my first day there they told me I was in. I couldn't believe it when they told me - I still can't. I'm looking forward to it so much," she said.

"There's never been anything else I've wanted to do. I've always just wanted to be a ballet dancer. It looks more certain now, which is really exciting."

Lisa started dancing when she was 4 and has never stopped.

"She's absolutely ballet-mad. She lives, breathes and eats ballet. She'd sleep here at the studio, too, if I let her," Dance and Theatre Arts School ballet teacher Caroline Claver said.

"The Australian Ballet School is a highly prestigious international school. It's terribly difficult to get in and it really is a remarkable achievement for her.

"At a conservative estimate, they'd audition well over 3000 people a year from all around the world. That's how hard it is to get in," she said.

"She's going to be big one day. If you've gone to the Australian Ballet School, you're not going to be out of work. They use it as a feeder for the Australian Ballet Company, which is huge."

Lisa also studies the Cecchetti ballet style at the Bennett School of Ballet and contemporary dance with dancer and choreographer Kilda Northcott.

Staff at the Australian Ballet School would hone her talents and prepare her for a career in classical ballet.

"They build great technique and combine it with artistry," Lisa said.

She moves to Melbourne in January and will live in an apartment with other ballet dancers.

"One day, I want to be a principal dancer and dance all over the world," she said.

"When I dance I feel like anything's possible. I can't imagine not doing it."
