Dumping of fuel in drain 'dangerous, disappointing'

The intentional dumping of 35 litres of petrol in a stormwater drain in South Dunedin last night was "dangerous and disappointing'', Z says.

Z spokesman Jonathan Hill said it appeared a motorist had accidentally put petrol in a vehicle powered by a diesel engine at the Z Andy Bay service station, in Andersons Bay Rd.

The vehicle was pushed around the side of the station and the motorist "pulled the plug'' from the bottom of the vehicle's tank and emptied about 35 litres of fuel down a stormwater drain about 6pm.

The dumping of the petrol was captured on CCTV and a decision would be made today on what action Z would take against the motorist.

The fuel dumping was "very dangerous and disappointing''.

"It's not something we can stand for or tolerate ...

"It's a particularly stupid thing to do and we want to make sure the right action is taken to make sure it doesn't happen again and we want to send the right signal for anyone else considering doing something as dumb as this.''

Contractors for Z were deployed after the spill to try to recover the fuel from the drain.

An incident report today would reveal how much fuel was recovered.
