When a drunken brawl broke out early yesterday, police did not have far to go.
An off-duty officer alerted police to the altercation outside Dunedin Central Police Station shortly after 4am.
Backup was called, and four men were arrested, Senior Sergeant Craig Brown said.
"We didn't have to take them far."
Police arrested a 19-year-old man for assaulting a policeman and resisting arrest, a 23-year-old man for aggravated assault and resisting arrest, a 20-year-old man for obstruction, offensive language and resisting arrest, and a 19-year-old man for disorderly behaviour likely to cause violence, resisting arrest and breaching bail.
The men will appear in the Dunedin District Court this week.
• A man was arrested after an alleged burglary of a Maori Rd property on Saturday night.
Police were called to the property shortly before 6pm and arrested a 39-year-old man.
He will appear in Dunedin District Court this week.
• Fifteen passengers escaped injury when the bus they were in collided with a car in Dunedin, police said.
The accident happened at the intersection of Princes St and South Rd, near the Oval playing field, about 9.20am on Saturday, Snr Sgt Brown said.
It appeared the driver of the car had failed to give way, but inquiries were continuing, he said.
The driver received bumps and grazes, but was otherwise unhurt.
Willowbank fire station was kept busy after attending three couch fires in half an hour on Saturday night.
Firefighters were called to a couch fire on Great King St at 10.40pm, on Dundas St at 11pm, and 15 minutes later on Dundas St.
• Invercargill police are appealing for information after a stolen vehicle was involved in multiple incidents yesterday morning.
A white Nissan Navara four-wheel-drive was stolen from a Pomona St property at 5am, and involved in a collision with a green Honda vehicle near the Invercargill airport a short time later, Senior Sergeant Maggie Windle, of Invercargill, said.
Emergency services were called to the Waikiwi Bowling Club, after reports the vehicle was alight.
Police carried out a scene examination of the vehicle and inquiries are continuing.
Snr Sgt Windle said the driver of the vehicle was described as a male caucasian in his early 20s with a "chubby face", and the passenger described as a male caucasian in his early 20s with "distinctive teeth".
• Police have arrested an unemployed man alleged to have held up an Invercargill fish and chip shop on Friday night.
Police were called to the Albatross fish and chip shop in Ythan St shortly before 8pm, after reports a man had demanded money from staff.
A 21-year-old man was arrested and charged with aggravated burglary and demanding with menace, and will appear in the Invercargill District Court today.
