Drugged man’s story crashes

Two men were taken to Dunedin Hospital last night under the influence of drugs after reporting to emergency services they had been involved in a car crash.

Police, three Fire Service appliances and St John paramedics were called to Pine Hill just before 7pm after a report of a car crash.

A St John spokesman said a man claiming to have been involved in the crash said he and four others were injured when the car rolled.

However, when emergency services located the man, who was with a friend, he was incoherent.

"Initial reports said there had been a vehicle crash,'' he said.

"We found a vehicle that matched the description of that car but it was sitting on its wheels and hadn't rolled and had no damage.''

Two appliances responded to the initial call, but when the other three occupants could not be found, a third appliance was dispatched.

It emerged there were no other people at the scene, the St John spokesman said.

"We transported two patients to hospital in a moderate condition,'' he said.

"Two males intoxicated on some substance.''

It was not clear what the pair were under the influence of.

Senior Sergeant Ian Temple said police had spoken to the pair, but they were not charged with any offences.
