Motorists should be prepared for foggy conditions around the region this coming week.

The Leith Saddle on Dunedin's Northern Motorway was just one area shrouded in fog yesterday.

Electronic warning signs had been placed on the saddle to warn drivers of low visibility and icy road conditions.

The latest MetService forecast predicted cloudy, foggy conditions to continue until as late as Wednesday next week, aside from a fine spell tomorrow morning.

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency Otago journey manager Nicole Felts advised drivers to slow down, increase following distances and dip lights.

"When travelling in fog, increase your following distance and drive with your lights dipped.

"Don’t just turn your park lights on.

"They are hard for oncoming drivers to see and do little to improve your vision.

Much of this season’s fog had been caused by the prevailing high bringing calm and settled conditions.

Fog typically rose from river valleys and large water sources during still winter conditions, affecting areas such as State Highway 83 (Waitaki Valley), SH 87 (Strath Taieri) and SH 1 (Dunedin Northern Motorway).

Alexandra, Clyde and Cromwell, Wanaka and Queenstown had all been affected by fog this season, she said.
