Speed and slippery conditions are being blamed for an accident in which a car rolled ‘‘a few times'' on a steep Dunedin road.
The male driver rounded a bend from Orbell St on to Fea St in Dalmore and went off the road about 3pm yesterday. The car rolled about 10m down a grass bank and came to rest on its roof.
The driver, in his 20s, was the sole occupant of the vehicle.
The young man was trapped for about 30 minutes before emergency services freed him. He was transported to Dunedin Hospital.
The extent of his injuries were unknown but he was able to walk unaided from the crash site.
Sergeant Glenn Lloyd-Jones, of Dunedin, said speed and road conditions might have been to blame for the accident.
‘‘He's [the driver] come around the corner and something's happened as far as control and he's come off the grass verge,'' Sgt Lloyd-Jones said, at the scene.
‘‘We've had a lot of hot weather and now we've got a bit of rain and it tends to make the road a bit slippery.
‘‘Drivers need to pay a bit more attention after a bit of a downpour.''Fire Communications Centre shift manager Andrew Norris said appliances from Willowbank and Dunedin city stations attended the accident.
Earlier yesterday, a mother and son had a wet start to the day when their car left the road near Deborah Bay and landed in Otago Harbour.
The pairwere able to get out of the car unaided before being picked up by a passing motorist, Mr Norris said.
They were dropped at the Port Chalmers police station and an ambulance was called, although the pair had only ‘‘very minor injuries''.
