A man who allegedly drove for two hours while up to three times over the drink-driving limit, added to the charges against him after allegedly driving away from the Dunedin Central Police Station while still drunk.
The 42-year-old Mataura man, who was on his way from Mataura to Christchurch, was stopped in Dunedin early on Saturday.
He recorded a breath-alcohol level of 1314mcg. The legal breath-alcohol limit is 400mcg.
The man was detained, charged with driving with excess breath alcohol and driving while forbidden, had his licence suspended for 28 days and his keys confiscated.
He was held in the cells for about 10 hours, while he sobered up.
Senior Sergeant Craig Brown, of Dunedin, said it turned out the man had been spoken to several hours earlier by police in Gore, who told him not to drive.
However, about 10.30pm a car with the same registration was reported to police after it crashed into a parked car in Balclutha's main street.
The man was detained in Dunedin several hours later.
Later that morning, the car keys were handed over to a friend of the man's, who had come to the station to collect him.
However, it appeared that person gave the man back his keys, Snr Sgt Brown said.
The man then drove the car out of the station's alleyway.
He was pulled over less than a minute later in St Andrew St and arrested, had his car impounded and his driver's licence suspended for a further 28 days.
When breath-tested he recorded 600mcg.
He will appear in the Dunedin District Court on Friday.
