A horrified caller contacted police after seeing a dog being dragged by a ute around a Dunedin suburb yesterday.
''It was first reported the person was taking it for a drive at 40kmh and the dog wasn't keeping up,'' Senior Sergeant Dave Scott, of Dunedin, said of the Pine Hill incident.
''But that wasn't the case. It was more the dog had fallen off and the owner wasn't aware of it ... as soon as he came aware he stopped and sorted it out.''
The visibly upset dog owner, who declined to be named, said the Jack Russell terrier was at the vets for treatment to its injuries.
The dog's condition was not known last night.
