Don't put your brolly away just yet

Don't get too comfortable in thinking yesterday's high of 23degC in Dunedin city, Oamaru and Alexandra signalled a warm weekend ahead.

It did not.

MetService duty meteorologist Rob Kerr said the warm weather in the Otago region would not last, with a front bringing ''heavy showers'' today.

Temperatures would also drop, with a high of about 13degC forecast for today and 16degC tomorrow in Dunedin city.

The forecast heavy showers would clear late Sunday evening and into Monday.

It would be a ''similar story'' for the regions, Mr Kerr said.

MetService meteorologist Lisa Murray said the spring-like weather could bring thunderstorms to the region today and was consistent with an El Nino summer ahead.

Dunedin Airport reached 22degC yesterday while Queenstown and Balclutha hit highs of 20degC and 19degC respectively.
