Some of the best handlers in the country, and their dogs, competed in the Taieri Canine Training Centre's dog agility competition at the weekend.
More than 100 dogs from Southland, Otago and Canterbury, and one from England, showed off their skills at the Mosgiel Equestrian Centre.
Competitor Denise Reeve said the events were "so much fun" because everyone was very friendly.
She encouraged interested dog owners to join a club and get involved.
Any dog was capable of competing as the pressure mostly came down to the handler.
Paul Hickey said if a mistake was made by the dog, 99% of the time it was the handler's fault for giving it mixed signals.
The dog would follow the instructions it was given by the handler's body, he said.
Top requirements for a successful partnership were a "dog with drive" and a "good bond between the handler and the dog".
