Two dogs have been rescued from a house fire in the Dunedin suburb of Waverley.

Fire-fighters were called to the blaze this afternoon on Scobie Rd.

No people were inside, Senior Station Officer Pete Douglas said.

There were flames and heavy smoke when crews arrived.

The fire has since been contained, but crews remain at the site dampening down hotspots, he said.
