Dunedin City Council senior animal control officer Jim Pryde said dog owners faced $300 fines for failing to comply with council bylaws.
"The number of people that are not picking up after their dogs is concerning, and dog owners will find that if they don't, they are likely to receive an infringement notice," he said.
Animal control officers daily patrolled areas popular with dog walking, such as beaches, sports grounds and reserves.
Dog owners received copies of the council bylaws with their dog registration, so there were no excuses for not knowing their responsibilities, which included carrying the means to remove faeces.
Council roading maintenance engineer Peter Standring said suburban streets were cleaned every six to eight weeks as part of the city's street cleaning schedule, but put the onus on dog owners to take responsibility for their animals' faeces.
