Mosgiel Pool has gone to the dogs - literally.

Yesterday, Dunedin's pooches got a chance to plunge into the pool to mark the end of the swimming season.

About 30 small dogs enjoyed the two-hour morning session and about 40 larger dogs paddled and played the afternoon away.

Moana Pool booking co-ordinator Janene Sims said the event was a success.

''They all seem very happy. It's been loads of fun and really enjoyable and for me even as a spectator."

The feedback received from owners was positive.

''Every single one of them said they would come back and do it again,'' she said.

There was the odd bump, slip and bark among the furry fraternity, but no dogs provided any issues and all showed their barks were bigger than their bites.

''This is just play stuff,'' Ms Sims said.

Two staff were on hand in the swimming pool to help out the dogs if needed and, fortunately for the pair, the dogs were able to keep their bodily functions in check as they swam in the pool.

Among the playful pooches was Scruffy, a 9-year-old bearded collie cross. Despite being among the older dogs at the pool, he was as enthusiastic about the water as any, leaping and diving into the pool.

''He loves swimming,'' his owner, Cheryl Pearson, said.

''He's a bit older. He needs a hand getting out of the pool. But he loves it.''

Ms Sims said she hoped a similar event could take place in future.
