For the skinny on ultimate biking freedom, look no further than the Southern Free Beaches naturist club.

About 15 members of the group rode from the Waitati Hall to Doctors Point yesterday at noon clad in helmets, the odd splash of paint and very little else to celebrate the World Naked Bike Ride.

It was the seventh time the group had participated in the event, which promotes issues such as renewable fuels, sustainable transport and positive body images.

Organiser Brent Patterson said the group enjoyed holding the ride in Waitati and finished the 3km trip off with a walk along the beach and lunch.

"Last year we had a few of the locals join us,'' he said.

"They just came out of their houses and joined in, but it was a bit cooler this year.

"There were people at their gates waiting for us to go by and waving and encouraging us.''

The community was very accepting and the days of garnering strange looks and head scratching were long gone.

"We used to do it on the [Otago Central] Rail Trail, but it's much better in Waitati,'' Mr Patterson said.

"The people are very accepting in Waitati.''
