Distracted drivers targeted

Otago coastal road policing manager Senior Sergeant Phil McDouall talks to a motorist in Dunedin yesterday during a national operation targeting distracted drivers.

The main activity police were targeting was motorists talking on cellphones, but they were stopping motorists over other distracting activities such as eating and changing music.

''We want people to concentrate on the road, with both hands on the wheel.''

The one-hour sting in Crawford St from 1.30pm yesterday caught three motorists talking on cellphones.

They were given an $80 fine and 20 demerit points.
