Wet weather may have been the perfect excuse for many to hibernate indoors yesterday, but big sale discounts drew others into town.

Arthur Barnett duty manager Rachael Gullery said there had been a "good amount of foot traffic" through the store, while a sale section had been very busy.

In particular, the menswear department was targeted for socks, underwear and winter pyjamas.

"Men typically shop out of necessity, particularly when it comes to clothes shopping," she said.

"Today, the male population have finally thought that it's cold enough to warrant some retail therapy."

Briscoes Homeware manager Mike Compton said the store had been "flat out" throughout the long weekend with its 25%- 60%-off-everything sale.

"It's been mad; it's been awesome," he said.

Representatives of other stores spoken to said business had been steady throughout the weekend.
