Delegates shown Dunedin school life

Brazilian delegates got a taste of what New Zealand education has to offer at a Dunedin high school.

Kaikorai Valley College hosted the international visitors yesterday and senior pupils took them on a tour showcasing its innovative outdoor classroom, "the urban farm".

Brazilian Educational and Language Travel Association institutional relations director Maura Leao said the farm was a fantastic way for someone who wanted to get into agriculture to be exposed to daily activities of working with animals and growing vegetables.

Ms Leao said she was in New Zealand to personally see how pupils lived in New Zealand, especially Dunedin, a very different destination from Brazil.

"The purpose was to see this locally and to be able to report home and talk to parents and future students."

She said what made New Zealand attractive was it had a bit of everything including beaches, mountains and friendly people.

"This is important for international students, that they should feel welcome spending time away from their friends and their natural parents in their own country."

She said the teaching methods in New Zealand were very holistic.

"It is very nice for the students because they can build touch with different areas of knowledge and that helps them decide what career they want to fulfil after they finish their high school studies.

"I think this is something that adds a lot to the Kiwi experience."

The delegates will be visiting Wakatipu High School next and then visiting schools in Christchurch before going back to Brazil next Wednesday.
