DCC water and waste staff stand by

Dunedin City Council water and waste staff are ready and waiting to help quake-ravaged Christchurch.

Water and waste services manager John Mackie said the council had been asked to report what resources and equipment it had available.

Water-leak detectors and mechanical fitters, who work in waste-water plants, had been offered, along with two miniature treatment plants which can clear about 150cu m per day.

He expected to get confirmation today of what equipment and staff were required in Christchurch.

Dunedin Delta Utility Services staff are working in Christchurch to restore power, water and waste services to city homes.

Chief executive Grady Cameron said 100 staff were permanently based in the Canterbury region and an extra 20 had been sent from Dunedin to supplement them.
