A Spanish duo metamorphose into insects tonight at the Temple Gallery in a dance work that takes its lead from nature.
Entomo is a contemporary urban dance in which EA&AE choreographers Elías Aguirre and Alvaro Esteban use human and insect movement to blur the divide between the worlds.
''We get inspired by the world of insects. Insects give us the inspiration to create something in an abstract way,'' Aguirre said yesterday.
''We may be humans and we may be insects.''
The dancers observe two small creatures and the surrounding microcosm through a magnifying glass to create the animal and insect dance work.
''There is an animal energy about the performance,'' Esteban said.
''The audience don't need to understand what is going on. They understand the instinct and can feel the story through watching us moving and the energy we have together. You don't need a literal story.''
The men from Madrid have performed in more than 12 countries. The performance is a collaboration between EA&AE, the New Zealand Spanish Embassy and Spanish Cultural Action, which promotes Spanish culture internationally.
Entomo is also on at the Temple Gallery tomorrow.
