Custody after chase

An 18-year-old Milton youth, chased by police in a high-speed car pursuit across the Taieri Plain on Friday night, will face five driving charges in the Dunedin District Court tomorrow.

Senior Sergeant Brian Benn said the teenager was remanded to the Otago Corrections Facility at Milton, after an appearance in the Dunedin court before a justice of the peace on Saturday morning.

"We would prefer he is [remanded] in prison, rather than on bail and able to drive on the roads."

Police had laid five charges against the teenager - failing to stop, driving while disqualified, sustained loss of traction and two instances of dangerous driving, Snr Sgt Benn said.

Road spikes were used to stop the teenager's vehicle on the Flagstaff-Whare Flat Rd, after he allegedly failed to stop at a Mosgiel checkpoint and sped off, leading police on a 15-minute pursuit.

The driver also had an outstanding arrest warrant in relation to a breach of community work in Christchurch, Snr Sgt Benn said.
