What do mining, the Tibetan flag, Bill English and the Fortune Theatre have in common?

They were all part of the Otago Daily Times Extra! Otago current events quiz held at John McGlashan College, Dunedin, yesterday.

More than 60 year 9 and 10 pupils from all over the region descended on the school's hall to pit their news knowledge against each other.

It was a hotly-contested battle, and included a "scavenger hunt" through a copy of the ODT, and questions on a wide range of events from across the globe.

The title for 2010 went to one of the home teams, John McGlashan College 2. The team of Josh Quon, Tim Shiels and Luiz Buck said their favourite section was 'What am I?', because they got full points, while nerves caused simple mistakes in others.

Second went to Otago Boys' High School 1, made up of Andrew Hopkins, Bryce Grellet-Deaker and David Moratti.

Columba College 5, comprising Ashleigh Neill, Sophie Ray, and Alex Menzies, was third.

Extra! editor and quiz organiser Ivan Behrnes said the quiz was "chaotic" to start with, but ran smoothly at the end.

He hoped the next quiz due to be held in Christchurch next week would go ahead as planned.

The ODT Extra! quizzes are part of the newspaper's Class Act project, which celebrates the excellence of young people.

Extra! is a monthly educational publication produced by the newspaper for senior primary, intermediate, and junior secondary school pupils.
