Crunch meeting on Dunedin Centre extension

A Dunedin City Council subcommittee will meet on Monday to decide the future of the Dunedin Centre upgrade.

The project, which has attracted strong opposition, has come down to two options - a smaller extension on the side of the building than originally proposed, or a "gut-and-rebuild" option favoured by opponents.

A report to the subcommittee said the extension plan incorporated recommendations from a peer review undertaken earlier this year, and had taken into account feedback from interested groups.

But Hands off Harrop, the group opposing the extension, has remained implacably opposed to any extension.

The report said the gut-and-rebuild option would "entail major internal structural work and additional costs", and it was not clear whether it could improve the flow of people in the complex.

The report recommended further investigation into that option.
