Witness ‘bear-hugged’

Two men assaulted a woman after vandalising a fence, police say.

Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond, of Dunedin, said police responded to a call about an assault in Gowland St, North Dunedin, on Saturday.

A 22-year-old woman walking down the street saw two men tagging a fence.

She took a picture of the pair’s parked car before the men returned to their vehicle.

As she walked back past their car, one man allegedly got out of the vehicle and "bear-hugged" her, Snr Sgt Bond said.

The man then threw her phone across the road.

The pair then got back into their vehicle and took off going south, Snr Sgt Bond said.

The investigation is ongoing.
