A tourist who caused a head-on crash with a $290,000 sports car has avoided a hefty bill and a conviction.

Philip Whiteley (65), of Greater Manchester in northwest England, would fly home today, the Dunedin District Court heard yesterday.

He was charged with careless driving, a fine-only offence, following the collision in Lee Stream-Outram Rd (State Highway 87) on December 3.

The Toyota Corolla hatchback rental car Whiteley was driving hit a white Porsche Cayman 718 GT4 RS after he crossed the centre line.

Police at the time said the tourist appeared to have suffered a medical event before the crash.

The court yesterday heard all costs associated with the crash were being taken care of by insurance companies.

Justice of the peace Helen Meiklejohn discharged Whiteley without conviction, allowing him to return to the UK.

According to Porsche’s website, prices for the 368kW sports car start at $291,000.

It is understood the victim’s vehicle was written off.
