A teenager punched four times by an older man on a petrol station forecourt in Mosgiel says the incident left him "shocked".
Lucas Blair said he tried to take a picture of his truck but he did not realise he was standing in the driveway of the station, blocking a man trying to get into the forecourt.
He apologised to the man, who was driving a silver hatchback, but believed the man did not hear him because his windows were up.
The man looked at him very angrily and became verbally abusive when he got out of his car, Mr Blair said.
From there the incident escalated and Mr Blair was punched four times in the head, through his vehicle’s open window.
He had his seatbelt on at the time and there was little he could do except try to avoid the man’s fists and hope for the best.
When Mr Blair got out of the truck to talk to the man two witnesses intervened to calm the situation and police were called.
The man drove off with his handbrake on and his gas cap open, Mr Blair said.
Ultimately, the incident had left him "shocked".
"I didn’t realise that someone would get that upset about someone being in their way," Mr Blair said.
He was left struggling to understand why someone in their 40s would hit a teenager.
After the assault he was feeling all right, but was planning to get checked out by a doctor, Mr Blair said.
Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond, of Dunedin, confirmed police were investigating an assault on a 17-year-old at a Mobil petrol station in Mosgiel about 7pm on Sunday. .
Police were following positive lines of inquiry in relation to the incident, Snr Sgt Bond said.
