A teenage boy and girl have been referred to Youth Aid after they were caught in a stolen car in Dunedin early today.
Senior Sergeant Craig Dinnissen, of Dunedin, said the boy (16) and girl (14) were stopped in Cumberland St near the University of Otago.
They admitted stealing the Mazda Demio from Kaikorai Valley and were referred to Youth Aid, he said.
The theft followed a spate of other thefts targeting Mazdas, including several Demios, which followed the same modus operandi whereby the rear quarter-light was smashed and the ignition barrel ripped out.
It was unclear whether the pair were responsible for any of the other thefts, and police knew others were actively targeting Mazdas, Snr Sgt Dinnissen said.
