A Dunedin man who plied a 14-year-old girl with alcohol and took photos while having sex with her in public has been jailed for nearly three years.

Ollie Abraham Carse Walker (21) appeared in the Dunedin District Court yesterday on eight sex charges and one under the Harmful Digital Communications Act following the events of December 19, 2021.

The defendant was surfing with an associate at St Clair Beach when he met the teenage victim, who was also with a friend.

Walker asked them to watch his gear while he was in the water and they agreed, the court heard.

The defendant and victim were later given a lift to a liquor store where he bought 15 pre-mixed bourbon drinks.

They got a taxi back to the beach and began consuming the alcohol.

Despite a conversation in which they disclosed their respective ages, they began kissing and Walker started grabbing the girl, taking photos on his phone as he did so.

Judge Michael Turner said that added "an element of degrading or demeaning behaviour".

There were further sex acts, some of which the man committed "roughly", according to court documents.

After the victim had consumed six cans of the bourbon, the pair had sex, moving into a bush area for fear they were "too exposed".

Walker again used his cellphone to take photos.

Before the teen left, she requested the remaining alcohol.

However, Walker said he would only hand it over if she performed another sexual act, which she duly completed.

The victim later caught a bus to the city with her friend and disclosed what had occurred.

When she repeated the sequence of events to her father that evening, police were informed.

Walker, meanwhile, used a social media app to track the victim’s movements and saw she was at the Dunedin Central police station.

He posted a "story" on the app, featuring reference to a rap song called Murder on my Mind by YNW Melly.

On the post he wrote: "I’m f...ing serious, someone’s going to die. I’m going to take your life, b...."

Police discovered they were not lyrics from the song.

Judge Turner said the post could only be described as ‘‘chilling’’.

The court heard the girl’s mental health had suffered so severely she had left school.

Her family described her as "a different person" since the encounter with Walker.

The judge accepted the defendant’s upbringing had been tragic and issues outside his control had left him cognitively stunted.

Counsel Andrew Dawson said his client’s range of diagnoses meant he struggled to make rational decisions.

Walker — who was also convicted of unrelated charges of speaking threateningly, wilful damage and two of driving while forbidden — was jailed for two years, 10 months.

Because he had been behind bars since 2021 he would be immediately eligible to see the Parole Board.

He will be added to the Child Sex Offender Register.
