A Dunedin rapist has accepted he needs to remain locked up so he can complete his rehabilitative treatment.

Adrian Justin Waa, 36, was jailed for eight years and four months after a jury at the Dunedin District Court found him guilty of rape, burglary and two counts of sexual violation by unlawful sexual connection.

He appeared before the Parole Board at Christchurch Men’s Prison two weeks ago and conceded he would not be released until his therapy was finished.

Waa had done the Drug Treatment Programme, was about to finish an anti-violence course and had six more sessions with a psychologist scheduled.

Panel convener Neville Trendle said there had been some "occasional challenging behaviour" from the inmate during the sentence but he had made good progress.

On September 22, 2019, Waa went to his victim’s home knowing she was alone as her boyfriend was in prison.

She told the jury how she had been woken early in the morning by banging on her front door.

Waa, who had only met her briefly in the past, told her he would not leave until she let him in.

He forced his way into the house and pursued her into the bedroom, violating her despite her repeated pleas for him to desist.

Waa threatened to come back and continue the abuse "every single day", she said.

Later in the morning the man demanded the victim prepare breakfast for him, and she was only able to flee the address when he fell asleep.

At his first parole hearing last year Waa said his family came before his membership of the King Cobras gang.

The board heard the prisoner had a criminal history stretching through his entire adult life and had previously been sentenced to more than seven years’ imprisonment for violence.

Waa’s security status had recently been reduced to minimum, Corrections said, and he was expected to soon transfer back to the Otago Corrections Facility.

He will next see the Parole Board in July.

His sentence expires in June 2028.
