The Otago tradesman accused of raping a woman in a Waihola public toilet can now be named.
Milton plumber Daniel Peter Moore (33) was declined bail when he appeared before Judge John Walker in the Dunedin District Court last week.
The judge allowed name suppression to continue to allow Moore to inform people about the charges, but ruled that order should lapse yesterday.
Sexual violation by rape carries a maximum penalty of 20 years.
Moore pleaded not guilty through his counsel John Westgate at his previous appearance.
The alleged sex attack occurred in the early evening of April 20. Police at the time praised local residents whose assistance led to Moore being charged.
They confirmed the defendant was not previously known to the victim.
Police wanted to hear from anyone who was near the town’s public toilets between 5pm and 7pm, and who may have seen a light-coloured van "or anything out of the norm".
Moore will appear in court again on June 28.
Mr Westgate confirmed Judge Walker’s bail decision would be appealed to the High Court.
