Public locked out after court threat

Public were locked out of the Dunedin District Court this morning after a serious threat was made yesterday.

Police have confirmed they are investigating what the Otago Daily Times understands was a remark made about a firearm.

“Police have received a report relating to information of concern that was made to an individual yesterday,” a spokesman said.

While judges, court staff, lawyers and media representatives were allowed into the recently refurbished Lower Stuart St premises, all others were kept outside by security.

Police said enquiries were ongoing and made no reference to whether charges were likely.

Ministry of Justice refused to elaborate on the nature of the threat.

Acting general manager health safety and security Suzanne Boslem said: “Court security restricted access to the Dunedin courthouse for a short period this morning to Ministry of Justice employees, lawyers and media, after police received information of concern.”
