A Mosgiel man is now in custody after a three-hour search ended in Waimate before noon today.
The 23-year-old would be charged with a number of driving offences, including aggravated failing to stop, Sergeant Blair Corlet, of Oamaru, said.
After first receiving a driving complaint before 8.30am, the man allegedly failed to stop, attempted to ram a police car, and drove dangerously -- including weaving through traffic while running red lights through Oamaru.
About 8.25am police received a driving complaint of a green Mazda Capella station wagon driving at speed and passing on double yellow-lines at Palmerston, Sgt Corlet said.
A short time later police received another complaint about the man, for dangerous driving, further north in the Hampden-Herbert Highway (State Highway 1).
At 8.40am, the vehicle was located, and it turned down a dead-end road near Alma.
It turned again, attempted to ram the police car, and the driver fled into State Highway 1 heading north.
Information from the public led to the man's arrest, Sgt Corlet said.
His car was identified in Waimate and the man was located nearby about 11.40am.
