Brent James Tiddy (26) appeared in the Dunedin District Court yesterday where he opted not to enter a plea.
He was originally charged with reckless driving causing the death of Katherine Joyce Broad but that was withdrawn by police yesterday and replaced by the more serious charge.
Ms Broad was a passenger in the single-vehicle crash on State Highway 1, at the intersection with Thomas St, on January 23.
"We lost our mother yesterday due to a tragic accident and need support as she’s left five children and an unborn grandchild behind," the victim’s daughter, Tara, wrote online.
"Kat was a beautiful firecracker and she will be missed very much. We are devastated."
Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond, of Dunedin, said at the time of the crash that speed and alcohol were believed to be factors.
A blood sample had been taken from the driver, he confirmed.
Tiddy was remanded in custody and will appear in the High Court at Dunedin later this month.
