A Dunedin man who threw sticks at a pair of sunbathing teenage girls has been fined.

Alan Ravenwood (64) appeared in the Dunedin District Court yesterday over the bizarre incident.

He was originally charged with assault with a weapon - an offence punishable by up to five years’ imprisonment - but that was amended to disorderly behaviour (a fineable offence), to which he pleaded guilty.

The oddness unfolded on January 18 at St Clair where the 14-year-old victim was sunbathing with her friend.

"The defendant was watching the victim and her friend from a position amongst the tussock on top of the dunes," a police summary said.

Ravenwood threw a stick, which hit the teen on her left shoulder, causing a 3cm graze.

Not content with the direct hit, he took aim again.

A second object hit the girl on her forehead, resulting in a bruise.

When the pair stood up and spotted Ravenwood peering at them from his elevated vantage point, they moved away for a few minutes.

Their exit did not deter the defendant.

When they returned he launched a third projectile, which landed in the sand by the victim’s knees, the court heard.

The teen called her mother who was there within minutes.

She confronted Ravenwood then followed him from the dunes into St Kilda where police arrested him.

When initially interviewed, he denied throwing anything at the victim.

Community Magistrate Simon Heale said the incident was "distressing" for the two girls but noted the defendant had not been before the court since 2007.

Ravenwood was fined $250 along with court costs of $130.
