A Dunedin man has appeared in court after allegedly stealing two boxes of firefighter’s uniforms — and leaving his own pants behind.
Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond, of Dunedin, said a 27-year-old man walked into the driveway of the Fire and Emergency New Zealand (Fenz) Dunedin Central Station on Castle St about 9.30pm on Thursday.
He took two boxes of Fenz uniforms, Snr Sgt Bond said.
At the front of the building, the man allegedly put on a pair of firefighter’s pants and left his own trousers behind.
He left wearing a flash hood.
Still wearing the uniform, he was arrested by police in South Rd about 10pm, Snr Sgt Bond said.
Wearing shorts, the man appeared before Judge Dominic Flatley in the Dunedin District Court yesterday, charged with burglary and assault.
He was remanded in custody without plea until Tuesday.
Judge Flatley asked for a mental-health assessment to be completed.
