A short-tempered Dunedin man attacked a parking warden and ripped off his body camera in a fit of rage over a ticket.

Gerald Wayne Moana, 48, appeared in the Dunedin District Court this week after admitting 11 charges, which included his ninth drink-driving related conviction.

The court heard that on July 6 last year, a parking enforcement officer was issuing tickets for Moana’s two vehicles.

The defendant confronted the worker before striking him in the chest and snatching his body camera.

While the victim called the police Moana shouted abuse at him.

"If you come round here again I’ll f...... give you a hiding c..., that’s a promise" was among the things the defendant said before leaving in his vehicle.

Two days later, police arrested the defendant in relation to an assault but he became aggressive and tried to escape.

A scuffle ensued and it took four police officers to restrain the man and put him in handcuffs.

On March 2 Moana approached a checkpoint on Kaikorai Valley Rd. He tried to avoid testing officers by driving down the inside lane of cars and attempting to turn into a side street.

Police stopped him and after a passive breath test gave a result of "over 400" Moana was directed to a patrol vehicle for an evidential breath test.

The defendant slammed the police car’s door and became aggressive towards the officers.

While he was restrained on the ground, he looked at a police officer and said "I’m going to f...... kill ya".

It took four people to arrest him.

He continued to resist while he was taken to a patrol vehicle and with his back against the car he headbutted an officer.

"You quickly become angered and respond in a violent way to situations that you disagree with," Judge Michael Turner said.

"You lose your temper quickly."

The court heard the parking warden had since changed the route he patrolled due to safety risks.

Moana said he "lost his cool" and was deeply sorry for the harm he had caused.

Judge Turner sentenced the defendant to 20 months’ imprisonment. He will be subject to alcohol interlock provisions once released from prison.
