Dog tracks teen who 'scarpered' from crash scene

A police dog tracked a drunk teenage driver nearly 4km after he crashed in Dunedin yesterday morning and fled the scene.

Senior Sergeant Craig Dinnissen, of Dunedin, said the driver crashed his ute into a power pole in Leith Valley about 4am.

"He crashed, then scarpered.''

He and his passenger both fled the scene but were tracked by a Dunedin dog unit in the early morning along streets in the valley.

Officers eventually caught up with the driver and passenger 3.8km from the crash scene, Snr Sgt Dinnissen said.

The driver blew an excess breath alcohol reading and would be charged, but his passenger was released.
