A man who allegedly led police on a chase which ended with him being bitten by a police dog in Dunedin last night will apply for bail tomorrow.
Kade Alan McLeod (27) appeared in the Dunedin District Court this afternoon with the aid of crutches following last night's incident, which finally ended near the University of Otago when the man abandoned his vehicle and fled on foot.
The defendant faces charges of dangerous driving, failing to stop for police, possession of a methamphetamine pipe, assault with a weapon, threatening to kill and four counts of intentional damage.
McLeod, dressed in blue overalls, was only in court briefly.
His counsel John Westgate said the man consented to a night in custody while police checked a potential bail address.
A police spokeswoman said they were called to a family harm incident in Oamaru about 6pm yesterday.
McLeod allegedly left the property in a vehicle heading south.
Police said they attempted to stop the car just south of Waikouaiti and deployed road spikes but the driver managed to evade officers.
The defendant allegedly stopped in central Dunedin and the pursuit continued on foot.
"He was later apprehended with the assistance of police dogs and was taken into custody . . . just after 8pm,” police said.
