A man who attempted to rob a Dunedin petrol station also allegedly assaulted a member of the public on his way from the scene.

Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond, of Dunedin said the man who robbed the BP in Princes St stopped to assault a passerby who was walking down the street nearby.

On Sunday at 6.15pm, a man armed with a weapon entered the BP and demanded staff hand over money.

The man exited the store without taking any cash, Snr Sgt Bond said.

He then left the petrol station and was seen getting into a vehicle heading north in Lees St.

Officers conducted extensive searches of the area but did not locate the man.

Investigations are ongoing.
