Police are on the beat and delivering crime prevention advice to Dunedin communities.

Senior Sergeant Mark Crawford has a simple message for would-be offenders.

''We are actively working to prevent crime in these areas and increase the risk for them.''

Uniformed police, the Dunedin South Community Patrol, and Neighbourhood Watch went door-to-door in the Andersons Bay area yesterday, delivering criminal prevention guides and offering advice to residents.

''We speak to potential victims and talk to members of the public to try and get them to do the basics and remove the opportunity for offenders,'' he said.

''This is something we are looking at doing all over the city. We have other initiatives in other parts of the city in relation to other different crime types.

That included visits to the North Dunedin student quarter. ''We want residents to know what we are doing and offenders to know what we are doing''.

Snr Sgt Crawford said police were investing plenty of resources in crime prevention and ''it is a key of our business''.

Tubby Hopkins, of the Dunedin South Community Patrol, said volunteers enjoyed working alongside police and delivering crime prevention advice.

Anyone wishing to join a community patrol was urged to contact their nearest police station.
