A cracked and sinking cricket pitch is being resurfaced as cricket's popularity advances steadily on the Taieri.

Taieri Junior Cricket Club president Donna Burns said $6000 had been raised to fix the Taieri College cricket pitch in Mosgiel.

The pitch would be ready for the first delivery of the season in late October and be used by the Taieri Cricket Club's junior and senior teams and Taieri College teams.

The junior club had 15 teams, Mrs Burns said. Grants came from the Bendigo Valley Foundation ($2000), New Zealand Cricket Foundation ($1500) and Mosgiel Round Table ($500), and the rest was paid for by Taieri College Sports Council and the Taieri Junior Cricket Club, she said.

The pitch was in dire need of resurfacing.

''The old pitch was starting to sink on the sides.''

Taieri College head of sport Mike Tabb said the 12-year-old pitch being replaced was worn and cracked.

''It was looking pretty sad.''

The final stage of the resurfacing included laying turf at the pitch edges and the artificial, all-weather surface on the concrete.
