Senior Sergeant Brian Benn said the members checked that no-one was near the stolen Nissan Pulsar.
The car appeared to have travelled from George King Memorial Dr, through a fence and about 250m down a cliff face. Its descent ended when it came to rest against a cabbage tree.
No-one was found in the ''precautionary'' search of the crash scene, Snr Sgt Benn said.
The car was stolen from Northeast Valley on Friday.
Its recovery from the area was a matter for the car owner and their insurance company, he said.
Extracting the car would be difficult, he said.
An investigation into the theft of the car was ongoing.
