Crash downs lines, cutting power

Sparks flew after a truck crashed into a power pole in Green Island, bringing down lines and cutting off power to more than 1000 Dunedin households for three hours yesterday afternoon.

A police spokesman said the truck struck the pole in Main South Rd about 3.15pm.

There were no reports of injury, but the road was closed and diversions were put in place, the spokesman said.

Warren Gray, who saw the crash happen, said he was leaving the NPD fuel station.

He noticed the truck turning around Carnforth St and thought it was cutting the corner a bit too close.

Mr Gray said he then saw "good sets of sparks" coming from the overhead lines.

He screamed at the driver to stay in his truck, before dialling emergency services.

"He’s a very lucky man."

Many power lines had come down and were spread across the road.

Senior Firefighter Michael Taylor said Fire and Emergency New Zealand (Fenz) responded and initially

advised the driver to remain inside the cabin for safety.

Delta responded quickly to isolate the power and the cleanup operation began from there, he said.

"If you’re involved in an accident where power lines are involved, best practice if you can and it’s safe to do so is to stay in the car or truck until power has been isolated to avoid the risk of electric shock."

Aurora Energy reported the crash had affected 1169 customers.

Power was restored to all but five by 6pm.
