Police said the crash, on State Highway 1 near Leith Valley Rd, happened just before 5.15pm.
The fire service had informed police that three people were trapped in the crash.
The highway was blocked and police were looking to set up a diversion.
A St John ambulance spokeswoman said two people were being transported to Dunedin Hospital, one with serious to moderate injuries and the other moderate injuries.
