It was a hootin' and a hollerin' good time at Outram at the weekend as the Otago Country Music Club celebrated its 40th anniversary.

Club president Jill Drummond, one of the original founding members, was there.

Only four of the founding members remained among the 100 or so in the club.

``We were all in our 30s. Now we're in our 70s but we're still going,'' Mrs Drummond said.

The 40th anniversary was a time to celebrate their continued love for country music.

On Saturday, members of the club spent the day at a ``blackboard'' event performing a ``singsong'' for a small crowd at the clubrooms in Outram.

However, things picked up and became more lively with dinner celebrations at night.

Mrs Drummond was feeling good about the day when the Otago Daily Times visited.

She recalled the first formation meeting of the music club at Heffs Hotel.

An ad in the paper asked who would be interested in forming a club.

Mrs Drummond said the hotel was ``packed out'' with those interested and while not everyone at the first meeting joined, there was enough interest to get a club started.

Forty years later it was still going strong.

She played guitar and was particularly inspired by country singer-songwriter Slim Dusty.

Two members of the club - Murray Marsh and Norman Hibbs - were presented with life membership awards at the dinner evening.
