Council talking to Govt about stadium funding

The Dunedin City Council is continuing with its attempt to secure money from the Government for the Otago Stadium, but the timing of the response remains uncertain.

Deputy mayor Syd Brown was yesterday not keen to give details of the request.

"All I can say is at this stage we are in dialogue with the Government with regards to the opportunity of funding for the stadium.

"I don't want to say any more until we progress that."

The Government announced recently it would inject about $7 billion into the economy over two years, and part of that would go to infrastructure projects.

Finance Minister Bill English said in Queenstown late last year no money had been set aside for the stadium project, but he indicated it might sit within the criteria for top priority projects the Government was looking to fund, and he was expecting an approach.

An official request had not been lodged with the Government, Cr Brown said.

There had only been dialogue at this stage, but "information has flowed".

A spokesman from Mr English's office said this week the infrastructure spending was a priority, and thinking on the issue was "high level", about setting up a unit to oversee it.

"There's work being done to roll it out."

He could not say whether there would be a response by early February, when the council will sit to make a decision on the stadium project.

Cr Brown said it was not for him to say how the council would deal with the timing of the Government's response, if it came after the February meeting.

"That's something that the council will have to grapple with."
