Costumes, book donations for library day

Book-loving aliens, astronauts and secret agents teamed up to celebrate the joy of reading at a Dunedin school yesterday.

Pupils and teachers of Otago Girls' High School showed up to class dressed in colourful and fun outfits for its 85th annual library day.

Librarian Monique Patterson said the event was a celebration of literacy and a great way to replenish the library.

Different school groups each donated a book to be added to the library.

This year the pupils were addressed by author Angela Walker, who recently published Ideals are like Stars, a book based on former pupil and New Zealand Olympian Dame Yvette Corlett (nee Williams).

This year the theme was "look to the stars", which encouraged pupils to dress up as characters or people who inspired them.

With the day falling close to Matariki the school decided to choose a theme that reflected it.

Anabelle Batchelor (14) said she decided to take the prompt literally.

She teamed up with a friend to spend the day as aliens, complete with antennae and blow-up alien accessories.

Library day was always a good way to have a laugh with friends, she said.

Last year she dressed as Where’s Wally.

One of the best parts was continuing the day as normal while still in the silly outfits, she said.
